Projects almost always have casualties, and Wolverine was no different. Some times it’s due to time, others times it’s technical and implementation risks.
Wolverine: Things That Weren't
Omega Red is a classic Wolverine enemy, and one of my favourites. He was supposed to be another BOSS character and another of the super mutants released from The Void mutant prison.
We had concept art for him and we even had VO by Mark Hamill! he would’ve been a great addition, but we just didn’t have the time to implement him into the game.

“YOU can’t kill him….”
“Wolverine, can you feel the…”
One thing I really wanted to do with Wolverine, was use his claws for more than just killing. With that in mind, the functionality of climbing came into consideration. There were even initial plans to have him perform unique stealth kills and attacks from vertical surfaces.
I loved the idea of players taking their own route through a level, using claws to carve out shortcuts, advantage and recon points.
Unfortunately, climbing never really got off the drawing board and no animations or real work were ever done on it.
It’s a shame we never got to see our Logan scaling those heights!
Climbing was the major traversal item cut from the game, but there were also a few other ideas shelved, too.
While in a climbing state, Logan could also slide down a vertical surface with his claws. This would be great for quick descents and breaking falls.
By pressing crouch just before landing on a surface from a jump, would allow Logan to land in silence. Great for dropping in behind guards.
Imagine this as a horizontal variant on a double jump. As Logan landed from a jump, he’d settle down and forward, pressing while in this crouched position, allowed for a much enhanced vertical and horizontal leap. This was an attempt to mimic Wolverine’s great LEAPS seen in the comics (all out-stretched and elongated).
Spiderman Played A Larger Role
Spider-Man played a much larger role in the game, rather than the small cameo he actually had. He was supposed to play alongside you in a few missions, but due to legal and licensing issues, it was never meant to be.
At least we got him to feature, which was better than nothing. Wolvie & Spidey have a special friendship 🙂
